Chetham's Library Handlist of Manuscripts: Introduction

The primary finding aid for archival and manuscript material at Chetham's is currently the Handlist of Manuscripts.  As part of the Library's cataloguing project, this handlist and the many other finding aids are being replaced with new catalogues.  As this work will take some time to complete, however, an HTML version of the handlist is presented below for use in the interim.

Readers are advised that the indexing and descriptions provided within this document are short and summary - at present, however, they represent the best single general finding aid available. From March 2002 more detailed listings of each item will gradually be added under hyperlinks from the handlist entry.

If you are interested in studying any of the listed material, or if you are unable to locate information of interest to your research, please contact the archivist.

Please note that it is necessary to make an appointment at least 24 hours in advance in order to work on material at the Library.  A letter of reference will be required if you wish to work on medieval manuscript material.

The handlist is provided with an index of names and subjects, which is available through the first link below.  Links are provided directly to the listings pages should you prefer to browse these rather than use the index.  The call numbers A-F are purely arbitrary and do not represent a classification scheme.
