This article is an offprint from volume 98 of the Transactions of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society, and embodies some of the extensive research undertaken by Clare Hartwell (author of the acclaimed Manchester Pevsner) on Chetham's medieval buildings. A full-length book by Clare on Chetham's architecture will be published by Yale University Press in 2004.
