George Jennison's History of Belle Vue

George Jennison's History of Belle Vue

George Jennison, grandson of the founder John Jennison, wrote a history of Belle Vue Gardens when the Jennison family sold the famous zoo and amusement park in the 1920s. Although the manuscript was intended to be the official history, Jennison insisted that publication be delayed for at least twenty-five years to avoid upsetting his family. Surprisingly the book was not published until 2013, when Zoe Willock edited and annotated it as part of her history degree from Manchester Metropolitan University. The resultant book, available as a pdf download, is a tribute to Willock's hard work and dedication to her subject, and is beautifully illustrated with material from the collection at Chetham’s Library as well as from other repositories. The full title of the work is The Making and Growth of the Famous Zoological Gardens, Belle Vue, Manchester, and the History of its Competitors: A Century of Lancashire Open-Air Amusements 1825-1925.
