The following items have recently been acquired for the Library's archive:

William Ford : MS A.7.74
A volume containing a number of locally printed items and manuscript notes compiled by the Manchester bookseller, William Ford (1771-1832). Most of the printed works contain Ford's annotations, whilst the extract from Aston's Description of the Manchester Exchange contains an engraving of Ford's print and book shop. The volume contains one item (no. 3) that is not recorded in ESTC and others for which no records are available in any of the main utilities. The volume complements the Library's collection of Ford book catalogues and manuscripts.

  1. Thomas Percival, A tribute to the memory of Charles de Polier, Esq; addressed to the Literary and Philosophical Society of Manchester (Manchester: C. Wheeler, 1782) With a letter from Thomas Percival to John Ford, bookseller of Smithy Door, presenting the book.
  2. Thomas Percival, Biographical Memoirs of the late Thomas Butterworth Bayley, Esq. (Manchester: W. Shelmerdine and Co., 1802)
  3. An account of the receipts and disbursements expended in rebuilding the steeple, of St. Ann's Church in Manchester (Manchester, 1782?)
  4. Description of the Manchester Exchange by Jos[eph] Aston Printer with notes by W[illiam] F[ord]
  5. Manchester Races, 1817 (Broadside) (Manchester: R. Tomlinson, 1817)
  6. The Hermes; a literary, moral and scientific journal, vol. 1 no. 15 Saturday February 8, 1823
  7. The history of the siege of Manchester by the King's forces, under the command of Lord Strange, 1642, by John Palmer architect. To which is added the complaint of John Rosworm, against the inhabitants of Manchester, relative to that event (Manchester: printed by John Leigh, 1822) With ms notes by William Ford. The volume was purchased from George Kelsall, bookseller.

History of Westhoughton Church : A.7.75
Typescript by Bob Walmsley. A comprehensive account of the parish church's history, resulting from "nearly half a century of sometimes desultory, and sometimes intensive, research into every available source". Presented by Alan Rose of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society.

Diary of Dr. Richard Kay of Baldingstone : A.7.76
The diary of a country doctor kept between 1737 and 1751

Pocket books of Samuel and John Kay : A.7.77
In October 2001 the Library received two manuscript volumes from Major General Patrick Richard Kay. The Pocket Books of Samuel and John Kay complement the diary of Dr. Richard Kay, which was presented by Major General Kay in September 2000.

Minutes of the officers of the Lancashire Rifle Volunteers : A.7.78
The meetings concerned general administrative and financial matters. Purchased from George Kelsall, bookseller.

Minute book of the Stonecliffe and District Nursing Association, 1939-1948 : A.7.79
Presented by Sue Richardson in October 2001. A minute book for 1927-1939 and an account book for 1913-1932 is due to be deposited in 2002.

Old Worsley: some historical notes : A.7.80
This typescript volume was compiled from the manuscript by Alderman W.M. Rogerson in November 2001.

The inebriate (cuttings collection on alcohol) : A.7.81
Contains newspaper cuttings on "inebriates and inebriation" from 1893 to 1895, including a report of an interview with Lady Henry Somerset in 1895 entitled "How drunkards may be cured". The cuttings focus upon "the study of inebriety", medical treatment developed in the hope of curing drunkenness, and legislation passed in an attempt to control the "habitual drunkard". The volume was presented to the Library by Lady Knowles in 1929 and was transferred to the archival collection in October 2001.
